Hygiene/Periodontics

Everybody wants a healthy mouth, fresh breath and pretty teeth.  The way to ensure this is to see your dentist and hygienist twice a year for an examination and cleaning.  Neglecting your teeth not only affects your self-esteem, but it also affects your overall general health.

Periodontal disease [gum disease] is a serious chronic bacterial infection.  It is a progressive disease that will not go away on its own.  There is no pill that you can take or rinse you can use to cure yourself of this ailment.  The only way to get rid of gum disease is to see your dentist and have treatment done.

Left untreated, the bacteria will continue to thrive below the gumline, releasing a toxin that will destroy the gum tissue and supporting bone structure.  This leads to tooth loss.  Gum disease in patients with diabetes poses greater risks in systemic complications due to their inability to fight infection.  Gum disease contributes to the development of heart disease, which is the nation's leading cause of death.  People with gum disease have a greater risk of having a stroke.  Pregnant women with gum disease can have pre-term, low birth weight babies.

Treatment for gum disease varies and depends on the severity of the disease.  After a complete evaluation, your dentist will advise you as to which course of treatment is best for you.  A common treatment for gum disease is called scaling and root planing.  This procedure is typically done by your hygienist and is done under local anesthetic for your comfort.  The plaque built up under the gumline is removed and the tissue is irrigated with an antimicrobial rinse.  In many cases, again depending on the severity of your disease, an antibiotic is placed directly over the infected site.

Arestin powder contains microspheres.  The microspheres are very tiny, bead like particles that are smaller than a grain of sand.  The microspheres are filled with minocycline, which is slowly released over time that kills the bacteria that cause gum disease.  Arestin actively kills destructive bacteria for 21days.  Arestin completely dissolves and does not require you to have it removed.  You are able to continue brushing as usual 12 hours after having it placed.  Arestin, along with treatment and home care can greatly affect your overall dental health.  In many cases, patients have had tissue reattach itself to the teeth.                                               Visit the Arestin site for more information.
