Crowns/Bridgework

Crowns are used as final restorations on teeth that have either undergone root canal therapy or have major defects to the structure of the tooth itself.  Crowns are made with different materials from porcelain to gold.  Sometimes crowns are used in cosmetic procedures as well.  See our page on Cosmetic Dentistry for more information.

This illustration shows a broken tooth that is in need of a crown.  The tooth is first prepared, or shaped so that it may fit under the crown.  An impression is taken and a crown is fabricated in a laboratory.  Once the crown is ready, it is bonded to the tooth.

Crowns will look and feel like your natural teeth and must be treated as such.  You should brush and floss daily around your crowns to maintain healthy margins.  Always make sure you see your dentist and hygienist at least twice a year.

This is a porcelain bridge.  It is replacing a missing tooth.  The teeth on both sides of the missing tooth act as anchors, or abutment teeth.  The bridge is cemented to the abutment teeth.  Bridgework does not come in and out like partials or dentures do.  Once the bridge is in place, it looks and acts like your own natural teeth.
